A Fool Hates Reproof: The End of Free Speech?

Robert Spencer -

European Union set to outlaw objections to Islamic practices

This would, of course, render us mute and hence defenseless in the face of the advancing jihad — and that is just what it is designed to do. Free Speech Death Watch Alert: "Objections to Muslim and Homosexual Practices to be Unlawful in Europe – Media MIA," by Paul Belien for Hudson NY, October 26 (thanks to Magnus):

If all goes as planned, the 27 member states of the European Union will soon have a common hate crime legislation, which will turn disapproval for Islamic practices or homosexual lifestyles into crimes. Europe’s Christian churches are trying to stop the plan of the European political establishment, but it is not clear if they will be successful.

Last April, the European Parliament approved the European Union’s Equal Treatment Directive. A directive is the name given to an EU law. As directives overrule national legislation, they need the approval of the European Council of Ministers before coming into effect. Next month, the Council will decide on the directive, which places the 27 EU member states under a common anti-discrimination legislation. The directive’s definition of discriminatory harassment is so broad that every objection to Muslim or homosexual practices will be considered unlawful.

ACORN Cover Defoliated

In Uncategorized on October 26, 2009 at 12:51 am

From Patterico’s Pontifications – a well crafted letter to the editor of the L.A.Times regarding an article published in the Times about ACORN.

10/24/2009

My Letter to the Editorial Page Editor of the L.A. Times Regarding That Fact-Challenged Pro-ACORN Op-Ed Written by the ACORN Consulta

I have sent the following e-mail to Nick Goldberg, the Editorial Page Editor for the Los Angeles Times:

Nick,

A recent op-ed in your paper defending ACORN makes at least two factual misstatements: 1) that ACORN staff offered to help shield an underage prostitution ring at only two offices, and 2) that no voter fraudulently registered to vote by ACORN had ever actually cast a ballot. Furthermore, your paper failed to disclose that the author of the op-ed, Peter Dreier, has been a (presumably paid) consultant for ACORN in the past . . . something that might help explain how he botched the facts so badly.

I think the paper should issue corrections of the two false facts, and disclose Dreier’s past consulting work for ACORN.

This e-mail will be a little long, because I’m showing my work. While it might seem like an imposition to ask you to read such a long e-mail, I believe I’m doing you a favor, because I’m laying out the research necessary to show that corrections are warranted.

Let’s start with Dreier’s false claim that only two offices offered to help shield an underage prostitution ring:

Two “gotcha” right-wing activists showed up at about 10 ACORN offices hoping to entice low-level staff to provide tax advice for an illegal prostitution ring. In most ACORN offices, the staff kicked the pair out. In a few cities, staffers called the police. In two offices, however, the staff listened and offered to help. That was wrong. But ACORN immediately fired the errant staffers.

“Two” offices? Try at least five, if not more. Let’s start with the two that Dreier appears to acknowledge.

1) Baltimore: ACORN employees were fired in Baltimore after being caught on tape advising James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles regarding ways to evade the tax laws while running a prostitution business that involved 13 girls from El Salvador that were aged 15 and under. One employee, after being told that Giles was a prostitute, suggested that Giles call herself an independent artist or a dancer. ACORN employees suggested that the underaged prostitutes could be claimed as dependents — and argued that the underaged girls’ income did not have to be reported because they didn’t have Social Security numbers. An ACORN employee also gave advice on how to deal with an abusive pimp, advising them to tell the underaged prostitutes to keep their mouths shut. You may view the videos here:

And review a transcript here:

http://www.docstoc.com/docs/11078409/Complete-ACORN-Baltimore-Prostitution-Investigation-Transcript

2) Washington, D.C.: In Washington, D.C., ACORN employees were fired after they gave O’Keefe and Giles advice on how to run a brothel including underaged prostitutes. An employee advised them to create a false company name to disguise the “lady of the night thing.” Giles was told to call herself a “consultant” or a “marketer” and to be “low key.”

Employees didn’t bat an eye when told that there were 10 El Salvadorian girls involved in the underage prostitution ring. An employee told O’Keefe to say that he was just the landlord and that he has no knowledge of what was going on in the brothel. When they discussed where his money came from, he was told: “When the police ask you, you don’t know where it’s coming from.” View the videos here:

And a transcript here:

That’s two. Ah,but Nick…there are more… ( To read the rest of the article – go here – http://patterico.com/   )

ACORN is looking more and more like a criminal enterprise – at the very least they need to be investigated . BUT the Democrats have no intention of shutting down an organization by which they benefit so much. The article below should be satire, but of course it is just another day in an a Congress that is being run by unethical people. Maxine Waters has been a leftist for many years, and she is still exerting her influence in ways calculated to push a radical agenda. Here is the link for the article -

Democrats Vote To Give ACORN Regulatory Authority Over Financial Institutions

WASHINGTON – During consideration of H.R. 3126, legislation to establish a Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA), Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee voted to pass an amendment offered by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) that will make ACORN eligible to play a role in setting regulations for financial institutions.
The Waters amendment adds to the CFPA Oversight Board 5 representatives from the fields of "consumer protection, fair lending and civil rights, representatives of depository institutions that primarily serve underserved communities, or representatives of communities that have been significantly impacted by higher-priced mortgages" to join Federal banking regulators in advising the Director on the consistency of proposed regulations, and strategies and policies that the Director should undertake to enforce its rules.
By making representatives of ACORN and other consumer activist organizations eligible to serve on the Oversight Board, the amendment creates a potentially enormous government sanctioned conflict of interest.  ACORN-type organizations will have an advisory role on regulating the very financial institutions from which they receive millions of dollars annually in direct corporate contributions and benefit from other financial partnerships and arrangements.  These are the same organizations that pressured banks to make subprime mortgage loans and thus bear a major responsibility for the collapse of the housing market.
In light of recent evidence linking ACORN to possible criminal activity, Democrats took an unprecedented step today to give ACORN a potential role alongside bank regulators in overseeing financial institutions.  This is contrary to recent actions taken by the Senate and House to block federal funds to ACORN.
A recent inquiry into bank funding of ACORN activities by three House Committees found that institutions that would be regulated by the CFPA have provided millions of dollars to the organization in the form of direct donations, lines of credit, cash, and other assets over the last 15 years.
The Waters amendment passed on a vote of 35-33. Click here to view the vote.

UN. to Investigate U.S. Public Housing

United Nations Launches Investigation of Human Rights Abuses in the United States

2009 October 24

by Claude Cartaginese

_DSC3638regionalapproachRaquelRolnik

For those of you who have never even heard of a “Special Rapporteur,” you may be surprised to find out that one has been appointed by the United Nations (UN), under a special mandate from the UN Human Rights Council (the successor to the corrupt and anti-Israel UN Commission on Human Rights), to open a probe—for the first time ever— into human rights violations by the United States because of a perception that there isn’t enough affordable public housing in urban areas.

Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman reports that Raquel Rolnik, a Brazilian urban planner and the UN’s choice for the task, will be investigating issues of concern to the UN vis-à-vis the United States, including public housing, homelessness and foreclosures. As part of her fact-finding mission, she will visit New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Washington, a South Dakota Indian reservation, and Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She will then compile a report on her findings, which will be submitted to the UN General Assembly and the UN Human Rights Council in March.

The UN Human Rights Council believes that housing is a human right, and, because housing (especially “affordable housing”) is so tough to come by in places like New York City, there is a strong likelihood that the United States Government is guilty of gross human rights violations.

UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing Raquel Rolnik: If we take housing as a human right, you have to go back to the idea that housing is a social issue before and more priority than housing as a commodity, as a financial asset.

While the investigator is here, maybe she can investigate this community organizer and public housing. (The Truth Mechanic)

The Illustrated Results of Obama’s “Community Organizing”

If I didn’t know better, I’d think this was Beirut in the nineteen seventies. But, in reality, it’s the current state of the housing for which Barack Obama claims responsibility as a “community organizer.” It turns out the developers enriched by his government-funded subsidies did a heck of a lot better than the folks who once lived here.
I say “once”, because the Boston Globe (“Grim Proving Ground for Obama’s Housing Policy“) calls many of the units “uninhabitable”.

As a state senator, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee coauthored an Illinois law creating a new pool of tax credits for developers. As a US senator, he pressed for increased federal subsidies. And as a presidential candidate, he has campaigned on a promise to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that could give developers an estimated $500 million a year.
But a Globe review found that thousands of apartments across Chicago that had been built with local, state, and federal subsidies – including several hundred in Obama’s former district – deteriorated so completely that they were no longer habitable.
Grove Parc and several other prominent failures were developed and managed by Obama’s close friends and political supporters. Those people profited from the subsidies even as many of Obama’s constituents suffered. Tenants lost their homes; surrounding neighborhoods were blighted.

Progressive blogger River Daughter put it succinctly:

In terms of concrete accomplishments, Obama and “hundreds of other organizers” were not able to transform the South Side neighborhoods or bring in new industries to provide jobs…
Obama’s most commonly cited achievement was in forcing the city to begin testing for asbestos in all city apartments.

Regarding Obama’s asbestos assertions, the L.A. Times alludes to the real story:

…critics claim Obama, now 46, exaggerates his accomplishments, particularly in spearheading asbestos cleanup at a low-income housing project. He omits from his account of that fight a longtime community activist who many people say played a significant role.
And for all his emphasis on the value of grassroots organizing, Obama eventually decided he also needed a law degree to enact lasting change, attending Harvard University… Further blurring the picture are his descriptions of community organizing in his youthful memoir, “Dreams From My Father,” in which he admits he disguises names, creates composite characters, switches some chronologies and uses “approximations” of dialogue.

I can see why.
Look at this beautiful playground, with all of children frolicking; they’re so care-free and so delighted that Barack Obama’s community-organizing has helped them at the expense of his developer friends.

The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator, hold 504 apartments subsidized by the federal government for people who can’t afford to live anywhere else.
But it’s not safe to live here.
About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale – a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.

Rifqa Bary Ordered Back to Ohio

In Rifqa Bary-conversion/apostacy on October 24, 2009 at 8:34 pm

What about the immigration papers the parents were supposed to provide ? Sounds like the judge wanted to get rid of a headache. So,not only was there a botched “interview” with Rifqa in Florida, there was a botched investigation of the family and their ties to the Noor Center. But most of all there was an overall ignorance of Sharia Law and the concept of honor killings/honor abuse that often happens within Muslim families who are very religious. Ignorance is one thing, but turning a blind eye to evidence is another. Experts were willing to testify at the hearings but were never called .More info at Pamela Geller’s website -  Atlas Shrugs, link provided below.

Judge orders Fathima Rifqa Bary to return to Ohio

A DCF spokeswoman just confirmed her agency received an order from Circuit Judge Daniel Dawson.

“This order indicates that the Court has relinquished its emergency jurisdiction and orders the Department to arrange the transportation of the child to the proper authorities with Franklin County Children Services in Ohio,” spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said

“The Department will proceed with those arrangements. Please understand that the details of the transfer will not be released, to best ensure her safety.

Rifqa’s private attorney, John Stemberger, has not returned phone calls seeking comment.Rifqa said she feared her Muslim father would harm or kill her because she converted to Christianity. She sought shelter with husband-and-wife pastors in Orlando, and lived with their family for several weeks.

Rifqa Bary Update:October 23,2009

In Rifqa Bary-conversion/apostacy on October 24, 2009 at 12:27 am
Pamela Geller has done an incredible job of covering the Rifqa Bary case. Here is a portion of the Florida Law Enforcement interview with Rifqa. Go to Pamela’s site for more commentary,links,etc.http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/10/rifqa-barys-interview-with-florida-law-enforcement.html It is obvious these agents are CLUELESS- they have no idea of what they are dealing with in regards to Islam.
From Pamela Geller:
Rifqa Bary’s Interview with Florida Law Enforcement

Rifqa6

The Rifqa Bary interview conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was just released. Here’s the document.

In a stunning violation of Rifqa Bary’s individual rights, she was not allowed an attorney or Guardian ad litem present. Consider that when the parents were questioned, the interview was supervised by CAIR representatives. Got that?

The interview was conducted on August 24, 2009, a month after she ran away. Rifqa has remained in foster care. Listen to the audio interview here.

I think it is a terrible violation of this poor girl that they would release a minor’s testimony. Add this to the parents’ release of her private papers and flash drive to CAIR and the media. Psychological rape is what it is.

Conducting Rifqa’s interview were at least fthree  male special agents and perhaps one female, David Lee, Special Agent FDLE, Jesi Baron – FDLE, Bob O’ Connor – Special Agent Supervisor, FDLE, Robert Redding -  Child Protective Investigator.  How these neanderthals saw no danger after this interview is unconscionable. It went on for more than two hours.

All the men vs little Rifqa:

Rifqa Bary: Uh, I am sorry but aren’t I supposed to have like lawyers here or anything like that
Agent DL: You’re the victim (chuckle)
Rifa Bary: Oh, really? Okay.
Agent David Lee: You know the difference in a victim and a subject?
Rifqa Bary: Yeah, I do. I do.
Agent: Okay.
[....]
Rifqa Bary:…. I have people that want to testify …my friends.
[...]
Rifqa Bary: Here’s the thing you need to understand. I almost feel like I had two lives. I was straight A,  a lot of people knew me at school, the cheerleader, the good student, the goody two shoes kind of girl that did nothing wrong.
DL: Okay.
RB: But at home it was a very different lifestyle. I have two groups of friends. One at school and one that knew the truth about me.
And that was my faith and how I was hiding and those are church affiliated people.
DL: Okay, your friends at school the first group, why are they different from the ones ….
RB: Because they did not know my home life. They did not know what I faced. They didn’t know the truth about me and I was a believer and I couldn’t express it.

The agent David Lee then asked about her religious upbringing. To say that these guys are clueless is being too kind.  Much more at Pamela’s site – http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/10/rifqa-barys-interview-with-florida-law-enforcement.html

Excellent job by Robert of explaining some of the issues in the Rifqa Bary case. Rifqa Bary Update :Oct.13th Hearing

It sounds like the legal system is not factoring in Sharia Law,honor killing etc. Very sad – The U.S. needs to wake up.Europe is finding out the hard way and starting to adjust. The report below is from Pamela Gellar – in person at the hearing. Keep praying!
*** Just saw Fox News – Phil Keating’s coverage – it was pathetic. He might as well have been reading talking points from the parents lawyer. Even though Fox is the best of the news media outlets,it is “soft”,and does not do in-depth investigative reporting. Reminds me of Malcolm Muggeridge’s book – Christ and the Media.Television has a huge influence on the world, and for the most part it has been a negative influence. As Muggeridge points out,all we get are shadows on a wall (Plato/cave),so in that sense our reality (as defined by television)  consists of shadows, not truth. We get the vague outlines of a story and believe that we have gotten the real gist of it.

Rifqa Bary: Liveblogging a slow motion execution, shariah style

UPDATE: Travesty of justice: Rifqa is being sent back to Ohio. Details soon.

Clash of human systems. That’s what we have here. Shariah law vs. rule of law.

I am hearing that the kangaroo court set up in Ohio will be communicating in tandem with this live Florida hearing. Two courts are meeting at the same time on the same matter; both will be listening to each other’s statements via audio link. Two judges will be deciding the case — whether Rifqa Bary goes back to Ohio.

The courtroom is packed. Many well wishers, all of Rifqa’s Christian friends, strangers, apostates, have descended on a small courtroom in Orlando.

Going live ……….. parents are in the courtroom in Ohio. Audio is going live now to Ohio.

To say this is unusual is a gross understatement.

Audio from Ohio: Listing attendees. Lawyers, guardian ad litem for Rifqa in Ohio. Waiting for Rifqa, her lawyer and guardian ad litem.

If I go dark it is because they made me shut down my machine.

Rifqa comes in. She looks so pretty.

UPDATE: Sorry guys — they made me shut it down

The upshot is Ohio has jurisdiction She has to go back because Ohio has jurisdiction BUT she isn’t going anywhere until the parents comply with a months old order to submit copies of their (and Rifqa’s) immigration docs which they have avoided and despite Elahi’s (the father’s hostile and belligerent lawyer) protestations and assurances that he would submit them. He has promised this for months.

Judge Daniel Dawson ruled Ohio has jurisdiction over the case involving the teen, Rifqa Bary.

Before the girl gets sent back, the judge says he needs immigration papers proving her status in the U.S. and proof from the state of Florida that she can continue her virtual schooling and receive credit in Ohio.

She is expected to be placed in foster care when she returns and will also be provided with psychiatric evaluations. Her parents will also receive psychiatric evaluations.

Rifqa can be back in Ohio as early as this week, or by an Oct. 23 follow-up hearing. (here)

So for RIGHT NOW she is in Florida. I am going to trancribe my comments in a new post ………

Antarctic Ice Has Melted! Not!!

In climate change on October 10, 2009 at 2:02 am

Man made global warming is such a con – http://www.worldclimatereport.com/

Antarctic Ice Melt at Lowest Levels in Satellite Era

Where are the headlines? Where are the press releases? Where is all the attention?

The ice melt across during the Antarctic summer (October-January) of 2008-2009 was the lowest ever recorded in the satellite history.

Such was the finding reported last week by Marco Tedesco and Andrew Monaghan in the journal Geophysical Research Letters:

A 30-year minimum Antarctic snowmelt record occurred during austral summer 2008–2009 according to spaceborne microwave observations for 1980–2009. Strong positive phases of both the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) were recorded during the months leading up to and including the 2008–2009 melt season.

Figure 1. Standardized values of the Antarctic snow melt index (October-January) from 1980-2009 (adapted from Tedesco and Monaghan, 2009).

The silence surrounding this publication was deafening.

It would seem that with oft-stoked fears of a disastrous sea level rise coming this century any news that perhaps some signs may not be pointing to its imminent arrival would be greeted by a huge sigh of relief from all inhabitants of earth (not only the low-lying ones, but also the high-living ones, respectively under threat from rising seas or rising energy costs).

But not a peep.

But such is not always the case—or rather, such is not ever the case when ice melt is pushing the other end of the record scale.

For instance, below is a collection of NASA stories highlighting record high amounts of melting (or in most cases, simply higher than normal amounts in some regions) across Greenland in each of the past 3 years, as ascertained by Marco Tedesco (the lead author of the latest report on Antarctica):

NASA Researcher Finds Days of Snow Melting on the Rise in Greenland

“In 2006, Greenland experienced more days of melting snow and at higher altitudes than average over the past 18 years, according to a new NASA-funded project using satellite observations….”

NASA Finds Greenland Snow Melting Hit Record High in High Places

“A new NASA-supported study reports that 2007 marked an overall rise in the melting trend over the entire Greenland ice sheet and, remarkably, melting in high-altitude areas was greater than ever at 150 percent more than average. In fact, the amount of snow that has melted this year over Greenland is the equivalent of more than twice the surface size of the U.S…”

Melting on the Greenland Ice Cap, 2008

“The northern fringes of Greenland’s ice sheet experienced extreme melting in 2008, according to NASA scientist Marco Tedesco and his colleagues.”

And lest you think that perhaps NASA hasn’t had any data on ice melt across Antarctica in past years, we give you this one:

NASA Researchers Find Snowmelt in Antarctica Creeping Inland

“On the world’s coldest continent of Antarctica, the landscape is so vast and varied that only satellites can fully capture the extent of changes in the snow melting across its valleys, mountains, glaciers and ice shelves. In a new NASA study, researchers [including Marco Tedesco] using 20 years of data from space-based sensors have confirmed that Antarctic snow is melting farther inland from the coast over time, melting at higher altitudes than ever and increasingly melting on Antarctica’s largest ice shelf.”

But this time around, nothing, nada, zippo from NASA when their ice melt go-to guy Marco Tedesco reports that Antarctica has set a record for the lack of surface ice melt (even more interestingly coming on the heels of a near-record low ice-melt year last summer).

So, seriously, NASA, what gives? If ice melt is an important enough topic to warrant annual updates of the goings-on across Greenland, it is not important enough to elucidate the history and recent behavior across Antarctica?

(These are not meant as rhetorical questions)

Just as abuse victims share their stories to educate the public, fight for the common good and hope that as a result politicians do what’s right, I felt it was important to come forward and give these new born babies a voice.
I am living proof these babies have a right to live, and I invite you to learn more about Senator Obama’s record on this important issue.

Rifqa Bary Update

In Islam on October 10, 2009 at 1:30 am
From Atlas Shrugs-http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/
Rifqa Bary’s Mosque Imam is a Muslim Brotherhood leader

Rifqa’s next hearing is Tuesday, October 13th. It looks very bad for Rifqa. Short of a miracle, this brave little apostate will be sent back to Ohio and into the clutches of Muslim Brotherhood operatives.

It is shocking. All of it. Shocking and terrible.

Ohio mosque imam — Rifqa Bary’s mosque — is Muslim Brotherhood leader

Hany Saqr is the head of the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in Columbus, Ohio, where Rifqa Bary’s parents are members. Rifqa Bary is the teenager who converted from Islam to Christianity and fled from her home after her father, she says, threatened to kill her for her apostasy. The Jawa Report the details on Saqr.

The Muslim Brotherhood, you will recall, is dedicated in its own words in America to “a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ’sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

From The Jawa Report – http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/
Court docs: Ohio terror imam Hany Saqr is Muslim Brotherhood leader

One of the more interesting development that has come out of the Riqa Bary dependency trial thus far is the meticulously footnoted 35 page memorandum submitted to the Florida court by Rifqa’s attorney, John Stemberger, concerning the Bary family mosque in Ohio, the Noor Islamic Cultural Center. According to Rifqa’s affidavit, individuals from the mosque had reported her Christian faith to her father and the mosque leaders ordered him to get his daughter “in line”, leading to the threats her parents have admitted to that prompted her to flee to Florida. Her affidavit also documents the Bary’s families activity with the Noor Center.

We’ve reported on the Noor mosque previously, but there are important elements to the Stemberger memo worth additional attention concerns the head of the mosque, Hany Saqr, who is identified on the Noor website as the “founder, spiritual leader, administrator and chairman” of the mosque.

Saqr’s name came up during the Holy Land Foundation terrorism finance trial (which resulted in convictions against the defendants on all counts) as one of the top leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in North America. Specifically, he was identified in a 1992 Muslim Brotherhood phone directory entered into evidence by the Department of Justice as a member of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the Eastern region “masul” for the group. The image below (taken from the illustrated memo on the Florida Security Council’s website) shows the cover of the directory and Hany Saqr’s name listed on the board of directors page:

As Fox News reported after the memo had been submitted to the court, Saqr denied all the charges. Presumably, this includes his denial that he was identified in the court documents. But not only was the home phone number listed in the directory registered to his home address at the time (as it appeared on his Ohio drivers license), but the office number also went to his office in the pathology department at Ohio State University according to university records. Additionally, the home phone listed in the court documents was registered for several years following that time, including to the address Saqr used when he and his colleagues incorporated the American Islamic Waqf – the parent corporation of the Noor Islamic Cultural Center.

We’ll wait and see if his supporters show up in the comments to deny this.

In the next few days we will have more info on Dr. Saqr, but for anyone who isn’t familiar with the Muslim Brotherhood, we would recommend this 2004 Chicago Tribune article as an intro into the terrorist ties of the organization (that also came up during the Holy Land Foundation trial) and the secretive nature of their operations in the US. Stay tuned for more!
